Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 19, 2026
Nocta ("we", "our", or "the app") is an AI-powered journal app that turns your photos and emotions into quiet, first-person stories. We respect your privacy and built Nocta to keep your personal moments personal. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, how it is used, and the choices you have.
- No account, no sign-up. We don't ask for your name, email, or password.
- Your journal entries and photos stay on your device. We never store them on our servers.
- To generate a journal, the photo and your selected emotion are sent to our AI provider for processing, then discarded.
- We don't sell or share your data with advertisers.
1. Information We Handle
1.1 What we do NOT collect
- We do not require account registration. We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or password.
- We do not collect location data, contacts, calendar, or browsing history.
- We do not use third-party advertising trackers or analytics that identify you personally.
1.2 Information processed to generate a journal entry
When you create a journal entry, the following information is sent to our backend (Supabase Edge Functions) and from there to an AI provider for the sole purpose of generating your journal text:
- The photo(s) you chose for that entry
- A video clip, if you attach one (Premium plan only, future feature)
- The emotion you selected (one of 14 nuances)
- Any optional short note or keywords you typed
- Your preferred output language (English or Japanese)
The AI provider used depends on your plan:
- Free plan (currently available) — Google (Gemini)
- Basic plan (paid, coming soon) — Google (Gemini)
- Premium plan (paid, future) — you choose between Google (Gemini), Anthropic (Claude), or OpenAI (GPT) for text generation. Video analysis on Premium always uses Google (Gemini Pro), regardless of your text-model selection.
This data is transmitted over HTTPS, processed transiently to produce the journal text, and then discarded. We do not retain your photos, videos, or generated journal text on our servers. Our AI providers process the data according to their own data-handling commitments (typically, no training on API inputs).
1.3 Information stored on your device
Your saved journal entries, photos, and emotion history are stored locally on your device. We do not upload them to our servers. By default, iCloud sync is off and your data never leaves your device.
iCloud sync is an optional, opt-in feature planned for the paid Basic plan. If you choose to turn it on, your entries are backed up and synced through your own iCloud account using Apple's CloudKit. The data is tied to your Apple ID — we do not have access to your iCloud contents. You can turn iCloud sync off at any time in the app's settings or in iOS Settings > Apple ID > iCloud. If you delete the app and have iCloud sync off, all local data is removed.
1.4 Subscription and purchase information (paid plans)
If you subscribe to a paid plan, purchase information (transaction identifier, subscription status, anonymous user ID) is handled by Apple and by our subscription provider RevenueCat. We use this information only to verify entitlement to paid features. We do not see your credit card number — only Apple does. See RevenueCat's privacy policy for details.
1.5 Diagnostic information
If you opt in via iOS Settings, Apple may share anonymous crash reports and basic device information with us through Apple's standard developer tools. These reports do not contain your journal content. You can opt out at any time in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
2. How We Use This Information
- To generate journal entries from your photo and selected emotion.
- To verify and restore your paid subscription, if you have one.
- To diagnose and fix crashes or technical issues, when you opt in to share diagnostics through iOS.
We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than providing the app's features.
3. Sharing With Third Parties
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with the following service providers, strictly to operate Nocta:
- Supabase — hosts the Edge Function that proxies your request to the AI provider. Data is processed in transit and not retained.
- Google (Gemini) — generates journal text for the Free and Basic plans. Also performs video analysis on the Premium plan (Gemini Pro). Receives your photo, video (if any), selected emotion, and optional note only for the moment needed to produce the response.
- Anthropic (Claude) — generates journal text on the Premium plan, only when you select Claude as your text model.
- OpenAI (GPT) — generates journal text on the Premium plan, only when you select GPT as your text model.
- Apple — handles in-app purchases, subscription billing, iCloud sync (only when you opt in), and (if you opt in) anonymized diagnostics.
- RevenueCat (used on paid plans) — verifies and manages your subscription status.
4. Data Retention and Deletion
Journal entries and photos: stored only on your device. To delete them, delete the entries inside the app or uninstall the app.
Server-side processing data: photos and inputs sent to generate a journal are not retained by our backend after the response is returned.
Subscription records: handled by Apple and RevenueCat under their respective retention policies.
5. Children's Privacy
Nocta is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
6. Security
All communication between the app and our servers uses HTTPS. Journal data on your device can be protected with Face ID or Touch ID inside the app's privacy settings. No system is perfectly secure, but we follow industry-standard practices to protect data in transit.
7. Your Rights
Because we do not maintain accounts or store your journal content on our servers, you control your data directly:
- Access & portability: All your entries are visible in the app. We do not hold additional copies.
- Deletion: Delete entries inside the app or uninstall the app to remove all local data.
- Subscription cancellation: Manage or cancel through iOS Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions.
If you are in the EU, UK, or California, you have additional rights under GDPR / UK GDPR / CCPA. Contact us at the email below to exercise them.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be announced inside the app or on this page. The "Last updated" date above always reflects the current version.
